Initial D & MF Ghost Successor: Shuichi Shigeno to Launch New Manga Subaru and Subaru in July

Shuichi Shigeno, best known for his manga series Initial D and MF Ghost, will launch a new serialized work titled Subaru to Suisei (Subaru and Subaru). This will mark Shigeno’s latest project since the conclusion of MF Ghost in February 2025. Season 3 of the anime is scheduled for 2026.

The manga will debut in Young Magazine Issue 34, on sale in Japan July 22, 2025, marking the beginning of what is officially described as a direct successor to his previous works. A promotional preview page has been released, teasing a direct continuation of the street racing story.

About Subaru and Subaru

Subaru and Subaru (Subaru to Suisei) is set in the same universe as Initial D and MF Ghost. The story introduces two new protagonists:

• Subaru Sato, a young female driver
• Suisei Kudo, a mysterious and talented young man

Though their names differ in Japanese (昴 and 彗星), both characters are symbolically tied to celestial bodies (“Subaru” meaning “Pleiades” and “Suisei” meaning “comet.” The official English branding, however, stylizes the series as Subaru and Subaru.

Shuichi Shigeno wrote and illustrated the MF Ghost manga. Shigeno is also known as the author of Initial D. The story of MF Ghost takes place after that of Initial D, focusing on the future in which electric cars have become common. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime, describing the story:
Japan adopts self-driving electric automobiles and renders most gas engines obsolete by 202X. The fastest cars find new life in the MFG, a racing circuit held on Japanese motorways. Initial D was also confirmed to be getting a special project to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

To commemorate the launch of Subaru to Suisei, Shigeno also revealed a newly drawn Initial D illustration, his first in over 11 years.
